Civilizations of Civilization VII
Aksum
The African coast of the Red Sea was the domain of Aksum, a civilization cited by the prophet Mani as one of the four great powers of the ancient world. For most of the first millennium CE, Aksumite merchants carried ivory, gold, spices, and other goods from the African interior to India, Persia, and the Mediterranean. Yet these same trade routes also sowed the seeds of Aksum’s downfall, as the rise of the Arab caliphates and their control of the Silk Road left Aksum isolated and in decline.
